A number of citizens were subjected to having their food rations withheld by the Ministry of Commerce, even though they did not have any prior violations that would require “unfair” decisions to be taken against them.
Muthanna Jabbar, Assistant Director of the General Foodstuff Company, said in an interview with Al Mada: “The Ministry of Commerce gave citizens a specific period to update their data,” noting that “most of those who were late in updating their data were temporarily blocked.”
He added, “All the families whose cards were blocked are outside the country and did not come to update their data,” pointing out that “the temporary blocking included 20,000 individuals.”
Regarding the days designated for lifting the block, the Assistant Director of the General Company for Foodstuffs explains, “There is no specific day. The temporary block on citizens’ cards is lifted as soon as they visit the Ministry of Commerce centers on all official working days.”
He continues, “The Ministry of Commerce did not record any errors in the system for registering beneficiaries.”
For his part, economic expert Diaa Al-Mohsen said, in an interview with Al-Mada, that “the problem is not related to corruption operations, and the citizen has a role in obstructing and withholding some ration cards,” indicating that “the Ministry of Commerce set a date for receiving the electronic card, so some citizens failed to update their data.” And receive it.”
He continues, “Many citizens did not check their cards, which led to the ration being withheld from them due to them not updating their data.”
It is noteworthy that the Council of Ministers had previously approved the Ministry of Commerce withholding the items of the ration card from general managers and those in their grade upwards, and for those whose salary exceeds two million dinars, and covering the rest of the employees with the full items of the card.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, approximately 644,994 citizens, including travelers and deceased, who were registered within the ration system were blocked.
Following the Ministry of Commerce’s decision regarding the blocking, citizens deplored the repeated targeting of the poor class in society, considering the decision unfair and unjust.
