Railways: Operating lines with international specifications within the path of development

the General Company for Iraqi Railways in the Ministry of Transport intends to purchase new trains and mobile units powered by electric power for the first time in Iraq and operate them within the Development Road Project.
The company’s general manager, Younis Khaled Al-Kaabi, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “New trains will operate on the path of development in line with European and international specifications at design speeds, at 300 km/hour for passengers and 140 km/hour for goods,” noting that they will “operate with electricity.” For the first time in Iraq.
Al-Kaabi added, “The company is working to reconstruct mobile units that were destroyed, stolen, and tampered with during the 2003 war and the war against ISIS,” noting that “the company is in the process of increasing the number of locomotives and trucks.” Al-Kaabi explained, “We have developed an ambitious plan to advance the company’s status, by focusing on the large and giant development road project that will qualitatively move Iraq in the railway field at home and abroad and will be the link between the world, as it links Iraqi ports to the Turkish border and from there to Europe, which gives Iraq a position international railways. The Iraqi Railways Director continued, “The company is in the process of developing the current network, linking the southern ports, and activating the connection of all refineries, major industrial facilities, and southern and northern silos,” noting that “the company has opened some sections of this large network, which extends in length to 2,200 kilometers.” He pointed out that “the development of the current network will be in light of the investment opportunities and the large industrial cities and regions that will be established and linked to it, in addition to the new projects approved by the Ministry of Planning, such as the project to link the Karbala oil refinery and the Karbala-Najaf express train for passengers, and other projects on the list of investment and joint operation, such as transporting derivatives.” Petroleum, construction materials, containers and ration card items.”
Al-Kaabi continued, “All of these plans require that the railways keep pace with upcoming economic events, by increasing the number of locomotives and mobile units, maintaining existing lines, and constructing new lines, in addition to raising the efficiency of the railways, combating abuses, and eliminating the problem of intersections with roads, with the aim of creating safe, fast, and accident-free roads.” .
