An informed political source revealed, today, Saturday (May 4, 2024), that the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, was subjected to great pressure to announce the postponement of the elections for the region’s parliament .
The source said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “Barzani is under pressure from his party, for the purpose of issuing the postponement decision, so he wants to submit a request from several Kurdish parties asking him to take the postponement decision.”
He added, "The President of the Region contacted the United Nations representative in Iraq and also the Ambassador of the United States of America for the purpose of convincing the Kurdish parties of the decision to postpone until the tenth of October of this year."
He pointed out that "Barzani will meet in the coming days with a number of Kurdish parties, including the Islamic parties, the Movement for Change, the Kurdistan Communist Party, and other parties, for the purpose of convincing them to postpone."
Press reports revealed the Kurdistan government's readiness to announce the postponement of the regional parliament elections, after the Kurdistan Democratic Party announced its withdrawal from the elections and their boycott in protest against the decisions of the Federal Supreme Court to abolish the quota seats. The Kurdistan Democratic Party accuses the Kurdistan Democratic Party of seizing the quota seats by nominating figures representing the components, but they are included. To the Kurdistan Democratic Party.
For its part, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan Party said in a statement yesterday, Wednesday, that it decided, in its meeting in Dabashan, to take legal measures and all comprehensive political and diplomatic efforts against the illegal attempts to postpone the upcoming elections.
The meeting warned of this “dangerous development” that any attempt to postpone the elections, in addition to being in violation of the decisions of the Federal Court and the procedures of the High Elections Commission, will also cause a major blow to the political process, and it will not preserve any consideration for the democratic exchange of power and the reputation of the Kurdistan Region’s institutions and legitimacy.
