Economic researcher Abdul Salam Hassan expressed his surprise at the Iraqi government’s continued commercial dealings with Turkey despite its violations on Iraqi territory, wondering about the reason for this silence.
Economic researcher Abdul Salam Hassan explains that “the political reality is what controls the country’s economy, as exporting hard currency to Turkey through the purchase of goods and commodities from it is the biggest daily waste, and commercial dealings with it must be stopped due to its transgressions against the country.” He indicates that “Turkey, through its own statistics, has shown that the volume of its exports of goods to Iraq reaches 20 percent. Despite the inaccuracy of these statistics, we are surprised that the government is still dealing with it commercially.”
“Despite the presence of a large military force in Iraq consisting of the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Interior, and the Popular Mobilization Authority, there is silence about what we see as continued Turkish penetration into the country,” Hassan added, noting that “there is weakness on the Iraqi side for unknown reasons, despite the existence of several economic files that the government can use to pressure the Turkish side to stop its ongoing attacks on northern Iraq, including the debts owed by them as a result of importing oil from the region after the International Chamber of Commerce, based in Paris, ruled that Turkey violated the terms of the 1973 agreement by facilitating oil exports from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq without the approval of the Iraqi federal government in Baghdad, as this fine amounts to $1.5 billion due to unauthorized exports by the Kurdistan Regional Government between 2014 and 2018.”
He continued, "If Iraq had found a solution to the Turkish violations on its territory through international resolutions and without resorting to military intervention, since Iraq is tired of wars, the problem would have been solved, as it did with the Gulf states before that."
Hassan stresses that “the suspension of imports of goods and merchandise from Turkey must be used as a pressure card to resolve the crisis of violations, but there is a major unknown reason that prevents even talking about it, which stands in the way of addressing this crisis through which Iraqi sovereignty is constantly being violated.”
Meanwhile, a local official reported yesterday, Monday, that the residents of Miska village, affiliated with Kani Masi district, north of Dohuk, were displaced due to the ongoing clashes between the Turkish army and the Kurdistan Workers' Party.
