Experts praise agricultural policies and call for supporting farmers

Economic experts praised the successful steps of the agricultural policy in the country, stressing that the steps of the Ministry of Agriculture and its adoption of strategic plans and programs led to the achievement of a package of important results, most notably achieving food security, providing many crops to local markets and achieving self-sufficiency for many varieties that were imported from abroad, stressing the need to continue developing the private agricultural sector, and working effectively to transfer modern technology and provide services to farmers and farmers and provide cash liquidity through specialized lending funds and re-experiment with the agricultural initiative.
Earlier, the Ministry of Agriculture revealed that it had taken a series of measures to support farmers and increase production yields, indicating that the measures included zeroing customs duties on farmers' imports of modern irrigation systems, distributing seeds with support of up to 70% from higher ranks, in addition to allowing the private sector to import fertilizers through agricultural associations and agricultural offices, including urea and DAP.
The official government spokesman, Bassem Al-Awadi, confirmed in a previous statement to Al-Sabah that "Iraq is working hard to expand irrigation technologies that reduce water use in agricultural fields and address water scarcity in the country, which can be used to expand the agricultural area in all governorates due to the lack of water revenues from upstream countries."
Drought is the biggest obstacle facing the agricultural sector, which loses 400,000 dunums annually as a result, according to the United Nations, which prompted various government agencies to develop extensive plans and programs to address this issue, especially providing modern sprinklers that rely on smaller amounts of water and can increase land yields.
Dr. Ikram Abdel Aziz, an economic affairs specialist, stressed during her interview with Al-Sabah the need to continue supporting farmers and peasants by providing loans, improved seeds, and fertilizers, activating the role of the private sector in this field, enhancing the financial capabilities of the Agricultural Bank, and encouraging local and foreign investments in the agricultural sector.
While the Dean of the College of Business Economics at Al-Nahrain University, Dr. Nagham Hussein, in her interview with “Al-Sabah”, pointed out the importance of improving the agricultural reality and achieving development with the aim of improving the income of agricultural families and increasing the contribution of the agricultural sector to the formation of the gross domestic product, stressing the necessity of transferring modern technology, providing services and implementing agricultural development projects through the amounts allocated to them from the state budget.
Dr. Nagham continued that the entire production process in the agricultural sector is in the hands of the private sector, farmers, and investors, so developing the private sector will be an important, large, and sustainable tributary to diversifying the national economy, and that the components of progress and development can be achieved through effective contribution to the development of the private sector, stressing that one of the effective steps in developing the agricultural sector is entering into supporting industries such as the manufacture of fertilizers, pesticides, mechanization, sprinkler and drip irrigation systems, and plastic houses, in addition to the necessity of entering into agricultural industries such as the canning, dairy, tomato paste, grain and date trade industries, as well as developing agricultural marketing in all its links, including refrigerated and frozen means of transport to transport agricultural crops, establishing modern warehouses, and paying attention to packaging, storage, and agricultural manufacturing to protect the producer
and the consumer.
