Three Swedish citizens have been sentenced to death in Iraq for their involvement in a shooting incident and a fourth may also face the same sentence for another crime, the Swedish Foreign Ministry said on Thursday (July 4, 2024).
The government summoned the Iraqi charge d'affaires last month to protest the death penalty for one of the three involved in the shooting incident.
Sweden does not apply the death penalty and opposes its application under any circumstances.
The Foreign Ministry said it had received confirmation that two other Swedes had been convicted in connection with the same crime and would face the death penalty.
"The information we have received about death sentences is very serious and we are working to ensure that they are not carried out," the ministry added in an emailed statement.
In June, Aftonbladet reported that the defendants were involved in the shooting of another Swedish citizen in Iraq in January.
The ministry said it had received a report that a fourth Swede had been sentenced to death for another drug-related crime, but could not confirm the information.
