The Strategic Center for Human Rights in Iraq revealed that there are more than ten million Iraqis living below the poverty line.
The center’s deputy chairman, Hazem Al-Radini, said in a statement that “despite the government’s great efforts in reconstruction in the sectors of roads, housing, and others, there are major issues that affect the daily lives of Iraqi citizens, namely the issue of poverty and the lack of job opportunities in the private sector.”
He added, "According to the Ministry of Planning's data, about 25% of Iraq's population lives below the poverty line, which constitutes more than ten million of Iraq's population, which has reached 43 million people."
He added, “Although the Ministry of Labor, through the Social Welfare Department, distributes monthly salaries to two million families, there are more than one million families who deserve a welfare salary. However, the 2024 budget came without any new allocations for the safety net.”
Al-Radini said, “There are more than 1,650,000 registered unemployed people, and therefore we demand that the government work seriously to reduce poverty and unemployment rates by developing a strategic plan for the next five years that focuses on supporting national industry and agriculture and reducing the import of agricultural and industrial crops.”
He stressed the need to “monitor the foreign labor that has invaded the Iraqi market and reduced job opportunities for Iraqis, which have reached nearly one million workers, while those officially registered and have official work permits are only around 40,000, according to data from the Ministry of Labor, as well as to restore work in agricultural, industrial, and commercial preparatory schools after the intermediate stage that disappeared after 2003.”
