The residents of the capital, Baghdad, have been in a state of great anxiety and anger for two days due to the "pollution syndrome" that they record every day during the night hours, as the atmosphere turns into "foggy" with a large spread of the smell of sulfur, amid repeated appeals that are met with continued silence from the concerned government agencies without clarifying what is happening, its causes, and the reason for its occurrence on specific days and hours.

The Ministry of Environment has not even issued any explanatory statement to reassure citizens, while questions continue about the reasons and source of the smoke of this magnitude, which leads to its spread throughout Baghdad and the spread of the smell of sulfur in this manner as well.

Air quality tracking data indicates that the air pollution index in Baghdad has been in a state of severe pollution since last Wednesday, as it reached 196 on Wednesday, 179 on Thursday, and 177 on Friday, but this rate is the final result of 24 hours, as some hours the index rises to more than 200 degrees, while the normal index should range between 0 and 50 degrees.

As for Saturday, the pollution index is considered dangerous and has been classified as "very unhealthy", compared to the "unhealthy" classification for the past three days.

The air quality index in Baghdad today, Saturday, reached 223, as the concentration of PM 2.5 particles reached 148 micrograms/cubic meter in the air, while the normal concentration rate is 5 micrograms/cubic meter, meaning that the current concentration of pollutants is about 30 times the recommended rate.

The data indicates that the air quality tomorrow and until next Friday will be moderate, ranging between 82 and 67, compared to a current pollution index of 223.

However, questions continue about the cause and source of this pollution and the smell of sulfur, as opinions spread that factories, plants and waste burning are all behind this pollution, but the questions are that the factories continue to operate, so why does pollution spread on specific days and hours and not others?

Other opinions and information were put forward, as information indicates the existence of agreements by copper and scrap traders to use the night hours to burn large areas of metal in landfills.

Among other data, is that burning regular waste often does not emit the smell of sulfur, and its emissions are only carbon, while sulfur is a clear indication that these emissions are the result of the increasing burning of petroleum derivatives and their refining, and scientific sources confirm that the primary source of sulfur dioxide emissions is the burning of fossil fuels.
