Palestinian Prime Minister Rami al-Hamdallah on Sunday suspended the decision to transfer more than 6,000 staff to early retirement in the Gaza Strip.
"We decided, in consultation with President Mahmoud Abbas and his approval, to allow health and education workers who have been referred to retire recently in the Gaza Strip to continue working in their ministries," Hamdallah was quoted as saying by WAFA news agency.
He did not say if all the 6,150 employees would be retained, but added that the decision was made "to ensure the provision of services to citizens in the sector."
The Palestinian Authority unveiled the move last month and was seen as the last attempt to pressure Hamas, which controls the besieged enclave.
The majority of the early retirement workers work in the health and education sectors, causing concern for aid officials in the sector over the impact of the move on the 2 million people living in the poor region.

The Palestinian Authority has continued after Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in 2007 by paying salaries to its former employees on a regular basis, but the salaries were reduced earlier this year.Ending / 25
