(Reuters) - Baghdad and Damascus announced two simultaneous attacks on the last bastions of the Syrian-Iraqi border, amid reports of coordination between the two countries to launch the attacks.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi said on Wednesday evening that he would start the process of restoring al-Qaim, his last bastion in the country near the Syrian border.
If this process is completed as planned, the presence of a supporter will end in Iraq after 3 years, during which he controlled 40 percent of its territory.
    Syrian parallel attack
In parallel with the Iraqi offensive, Syrian forces announced the launch of an attack on a stronghold in the border town of Albuqmal bordering the Iraqi bastion, which is the last city controlled by a supporter in Syria, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
And placed armed men, barricades at the entrances of Albuqmal, and blew the outskirts of the city, and the main roads leading to it, in an attempt to address the attack, which comes after the restoration of government forces the city of neighboring fields.
Al-Bu Kamal lies on the bank of the Euphrates River within Deir al-Zour province, where Syrian forces have launched a large-scale offensive in recent weeks, in which vast areas of the organization's grip have been restored.
In the event of control of Albuqmal, the entire West Bank of the Euphrates River will be from the border of Raqqa to the border of Iraq in the hands of the Syrian forces and thus ending the presence of a supporter in the West Euphrates to the border with the province of Homs.
