On Tuesday, the Parliamentary Reconstruction Committee announced its support for completing the legislation of the slums law, which will guarantee the distribution of alternative housing units to its residents or their transfer to other places.
A member of the Parliamentary Services and Construction Committee, Uday Shaalan, said, "The committee is working to continue reading the slums law to complete its legislation, as consideration of it was delayed during the past period due to the events that occurred in the country, including the Corona crisis and the demonstrations," according to the official "Al-Sabah" newspaper.
He added, "The law includes granting slum dwellers an official alternative housing unit equipped with basic services, or granting them sums of money to live elsewhere to end this file in a satisfactory manner."
In turn, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Planning, Abdul-Zahra Al-Hindawi, said that "the slum law collided during the last parliamentary session with some opposite trends."
He revealed, "The ministry monitored four thousand squatters in all governorates, inhabited by about 3,400,000 people, representing 12 percent of the total population throughout the country. Most of them are concentrated in Baghdad, Basra and Nineveh, while the rest are distributed differently among other governorates."
Al-Hindawi stated that "the ministry has prepared a plan to conduct a survey after the legislation of the slum law in the House of Representatives, which includes providing appropriate treatments for each of them."
Al-Hindawi believes that "slum areas constitute a very dangerous focus on the level of security and social conditions, and put enormous pressure on the infrastructure and development policies."
Baghdad tops the list of slums, followed by Basra and Nineveh, then Kirkuk, while Najaf and Karbala are the least governorates in which there are slums.
