After an "important" meeting, Al-Zamili threatens price-manipulating traders
Shafaq News/ The First Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, Hakim Al-Zamili, threatened today, Monday, the traders who manipulate prices, following an "important" meeting with the Minister of Commerce and security authorities.
Al-Zamili said in a press conference held today, in the parliament building, and attended by Shafak News Agency, "Today, we had an important meeting with the Undersecretary of the National Security Apparatus, the Minister of Commerce and the Director of Economic Security in the Ministry of Interior to discuss the reasons for the rise in foodstuffs in the market," stressing that "the Council of Representatives support the provision of ration card items to the poor.
Al-Zamili added, "The Minister of Commerce pledged to meet to provide two quotas to citizens during the month of Ramadan and distribute the ration card items monthly without delay," noting that "there will be deterrent mechanisms for manipulating food prices and the citizen's food, and this is considered targeting the country."
He continued, "We will personally supervise the monitoring of the market and food prices, and we will work in Parliament to legislate a law to support the poor classes," noting that "the Finance pledged to increase the allocations of the Ministry of Commerce."
For his part, Minister of Commerce Alaa al-Jubouri said during the conference, "The meeting in Parliament came to coordinate efforts to confront the rise in food prices," noting that his ministry "will begin tomorrow, preparing agents with the ration card items and distributing them to citizens."
Al-Jubouri added, "We found support from the House of Representatives to confront the rise in prices," stressing that "the citizen's strength is a red line, and the process of raising food prices is artificial."
Yesterday, Sunday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi chaired an "emergency" meeting to discuss food security in the country and measures to confront price hikes, and issued directives to the ministries of finance, trade and agriculture.
During the past two days, the Iraqi local markets witnessed a sudden rise in prices, especially basic foodstuffs, amid news that the Iraqi economy was affected by the developments of the Russian-Ukrainian confrontation, with the approach of the month of Ramadan.
