Baghdad - WAA - Fatima Rahma
In a new step aimed at empowering Iraqi women and enhancing their role in the national economy, the Iraqi Businesswomen Council was inaugurated in the presence of a number of prominent figures in the fields of business and politics.
The Council represents an important step in providing support and guidance to women wishing to establish their own projects, and reflects the commitment of government agencies and the private sector to provide the necessary opportunities for Iraqi women to succeed and contribute effectively to economic growth.
The head of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce, Abdul Razzaq Al-Zuhairi, said in a speech during the opening ceremony of the council, which was attended by the correspondent of the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “Today we are opening the Iraqi Businesswomen Council, this council that we have worked on for two consecutive years in order to mature it and produce it in a decent image that represents a positive image of Iraqi women, as is the case in neighboring countries.”
He added, “We in the private sector are grateful for the past years, which were filled with the support of the executive and legislative authorities for the private sector with all their strength through laws and regulations,” adding, “We look forward to the new laws such as Law 30 on Commerce, the Arbitration Law, and other laws.”
He pointed out that, "This council reflects a positive image, as everyone looks at this painting of Iraqi women, the minister, the representative, the intellectual, the pioneer, the poet, and the businesswoman."
He continued, "It is not new or strange for an Iraqi businesswoman to be distinguished, as we have been keen for this system or this council, which is a founding council, to have worked for two years to establish business centers in the Iraqi chambers of commerce spread across the country, and after that transparent elections will be held to choose the best among Iraqi women from all governorates."
Al-Zuhairi called on the representatives of the government to "support this council," noting, "We have provided privileges to Iraqi businesswomen to organize work and loans, and the work is proceeding in a positive manner, and in the end, it is a positive case for this society."
For his part, the head of the Parliamentary Investment and Development Committee, Hassanein Al-Khafaji, said in a speech during the ceremony: “The launch of the Iraqi Businesswomen Council in cooperation with the Federation of Chambers of Commerce is an important step that reflects our orientation towards supporting the role of women in the national economy and providing an ideal environment for innovation and sustainable economic growth,” stressing that “empowering women in the business sector is not just a goal we seek, but rather a necessary strategy.”
He added, "The Parliamentary Investment and Development Committee believes that women's participation in the economic sector is one of the basic pillars for developing society and increasing economic competition at the local and international levels."
He pointed out that "the establishment of the Business Council will provide opportunities for businesswomen to communicate and exchange experiences, and will be a strong platform to support women's projects and creative initiatives, which will enhance their contribution to economic growth."
Al-Khafaji stressed that "the Parliamentary Investment and Development Committee is keen to provide full support to this council and work with the relevant authorities to remove all obstacles facing businesswomen and provide a legislative environment that stimulates investment, especially those led by Iraqi women, to ensure the growth and sustainability of these projects."
In turn, the head of the Iraqi Businesswomen Council, Shadha Al-Zuhairi, said: “The Iraqi woman is different from the rest of the women in the world, as she carries in her history 7,000 years of civilization, as the Iraqi woman is an important part of the Iraqi economy, even if she works within the family and away from the spotlight. However, her role has declined during the past four decades due to the wars and problems that the country has gone through.”
She added, "Despite the challenges, Iraqi women have an amazing ability to adapt to any situation they face, and they have innate intelligence and the ability to solve problems."
She explained that “work for women is not just a means of financial gain, but rather an expression of the soul, conscience and values, as achievement means that you exist, and when a woman works and earns, she raises her social value and enhances her position in society.”
She pointed out that "there is no Iraqi woman who does not have a skill that can be converted into work that generates income for her, and thus she can help her family, and for this reason the Iraqi Businesswomen Council was established in cooperation with the Federation of Chambers of Commerce Association."
Al-Zuhairi said, “The process of establishing this council began two years ago when we obtained the approval of the union’s president. Then we began gathering women to form the council. Despite the challenges we faced at the beginning in convincing women to join, we found many wonderful women who hold important positions in society.”
She pointed out that "women in Iraq do not like the spotlight, because they need security to work, and they need a stable society to achieve success."
She continued, "After the government provided security and support for women and youth, we began to notice an increase in the number of women joining the council, and today we have not closed the door to membership, but we will launch new forms for subscription."
According to her: “When we started the founding body, we were keen to choose women who had real experience in the market, to create a safe environment for every woman, student or housewife to start her own business and enter the field of entrepreneurship.”
She added, “We do not find any university or any institution that teaches how to work and compete in this field, so we pay special attention to the category that is trying to develop its business, and we seek to support women who have small or large companies. The focus will also be on housewives and students, because they are the category that needs special guidance and support at the beginning of their career.”
She added, "When we started working, the community and even the union faced challenges in supporting this initiative, but today we see that the numbers are constantly increasing, and this gives rise to optimism and continues to support Iraqi women in the field of business."
