The Ministry of Planning announced, today, Saturday, August 19, 2023, that 1.1 million Iraqi children are deprived of their rights, at a time when figures issued by government and monitoring agencies indicate a significant escalation in cases of violence against children.

The ministry's spokesman, Abdul-Zahra al-Hindawi, said that Iraqi children, like the rest of their peers in the countries of the world, should live their childhood and enjoy the atmosphere of play and education instead of being marketed to work in fields that overshadow their rights and deepen levels of deprivation, especially in the poor segments of society.

Al-Hindawi added that although the rate of child labor in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], which reaches 7%, is low, this means that 1.1 million children are deprived of their rights, pointing out that various studies have diagnosed that children suffer from discrimination between males and females in the educational and recreational aspects. Especially in rural areas, and protecting them is a responsibility of both the state and society.

Al-Hindawi explained that children should enjoy their childhood and their rights should be preserved, not only in education and health, but also in protecting them from the violence they face, whether from their families, the educational institution or society, according to the official newspaper.

Thousands of Iraqi children have also been forced to work to support their families, given the difficult living conditions in the country and the lack of job opportunities. The Public Relations Department of the Supreme Judicial Council published statistics on domestic violence rates for children, women, and the elderly during the year 2021. The statistic indicated that "courts registered 1,141 cases of domestic violence against children, and the Baghdad Court of Appeal, Karkh, had the largest share, with 267 cases."

Figures issued by government and oversight agencies indicate a significant escalation in cases of violence against children. There are many stories that seem similar and are repeated in society, represented in the exposure of many of them to brutal attacks that amount to mutilation, torture and killing. Observers believe that the real number is much higher because cases like this remain mostly in homes and do not reach police stations, the judiciary or the concerned authorities, and are not registered by the courts due to weak legal awareness and the control of social norms.

Human rights activists are calling for an urgent and strict end to these widespread violations of the rights and dignity of the Iraqi child, through the approval of the laws to combat domestic violence and protect children, because the rates of incidents and crimes of violence against children and women have become "frightening".
