Parliamentary Foreign Relations calls for addressing the delay in naming ambassadors

The Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee discussed the issue of delaying the nomination of ambassadors with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, demanding that the ambassador be chosen in a professional manner and that he be progressive in diplomatic and political work.
Representative on the committee, Haider Al-Salami, said: “We objected to the political blocs’ selection of ambassadors from partisan backgrounds that are far removed from diplomatic work,” adding that “the ambassador in countries of the world is seen as a representative of the state and does not represent a party or political bloc, and therefore our objection comes from these premise.”
Al-Salami stated to “Al-Sabah” that “it is self-evident that experienced and professionally trained ambassadors are selected within the diplomatic corps so that they are familiar with embassy matters and protocols and work as ambassadors representing the Iraqi state,” noting that the committee “met earlier with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the senior staff in the ministry.” The shortage of ambassadors was discussed due to the lack of approval of the list of ambassadors, as they are of special grades and need to be approved under the dome of Parliament.
He added, “Among the issues that were raised were the reasons why the list of ambassadors has not yet been finalized for voting on, and the requirement that the position be for an ambassador and not a chargé d’affaires,” explaining that “the followed mechanism requires that the selection of the ambassador be done in a professional manner, but political custom includes 50 percent of ambassadors nominated by the Ministry.” Foreign Affairs and 50 percent by the political blocs.
