{Umniah: Al-Furat News} Baghdad and Erbil reached an agreement regarding the management of the new military points located on the Qara-Jugh Mountain in Makhmour.
The official in charge of the "Makhmur-Al-Kuwer" axis of the Peshmerga forces, Sirwan Barzani, announced that an appropriate agreement had been reached with the Iraqi army regarding the management of the new military points in the "Qara Chog" mountain, stressing the continuation of joint coordination.
On the 23rd of last month, the spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Major General Yahya Rasool, announced that 3 were killed and 7 wounded as a result of clashes between an Iraqi army force and the Kurdish Peshmerga forces of the Kurdistan region, in the Makhmour region, south of Nineveh, on the evening of the 22nd of last month, confirming An investigation has been opened into the accident,” adding, “The Prime Minister will form a high-level committee to investigate the circumstances of the accident and find out its circumstances and the resulting victims.”
The governments of Baghdad and Erbil expanded military cooperation between the Iraqi army and the Peshmerga, regarding the issues of borders and security gaps in areas whose administration is disputed between the two governments, most notably the Kirkuk and Nineveh regions in the north of the country, but disputes still continue over border areas currently known as the “Green Line areas,” which are the administrative borders between The Kurdistan Region and the rest of the governorates of Iraq that fall under the authority of Baghdad. The disputes in these regions are described as “chronic,” and calls are renewed from time to time for constitutional amendments to ensure an end to the crisis.
This incident is the first of its kind, since the military cooperation between Baghdad and Erbil, and the joint work to carry out military operations in the disputed areas. On October 19, Iraqi army forces recovered four military points installed on Mount Qarachog from Kurdistan Workers' Party fighters, who withdrew from them.
For his part, an official source in the Iraqi Joint Operations Command in Baghdad said, in a press statement, that “a problem occurred between an Iraqi army force and the Peshmerga forces regarding the right to deploy within 3 military points located at the top of Mount (Qara-Jugh) in the town of Makhmour from the side overlooking... Makhmour camp for Turkish refugees, from which armed elements of the Kurdistan Workers Party recently withdrew.”
The source added that the Iraqi army commander ordered the existing forces to rush to these points and assume responsibility for them, without notifying the Peshmerga forces located nearby, which led to armed skirmishes that quickly developed into confrontations, resulting in the killing of a Peshmerga member and the wounding of five others, and two Iraqi soldiers were also killed. Others were injured."
For his part, the assistant official of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan Center in Makhmour, Rashad Kalali, said in a press statement, “After the withdrawal of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party forces from the rubaya in which they were deployed on Mount Qarachog, 48 hours ago, the Iraqi army, 14th Division, deployed in those sites."
He added, "A group of 80 Peshmerga forces affiliated with the Kurdistan Democratic Party attacked those sites on Mount Qara Chog."
Kalali stated, "The Kurdistan Democratic Party and its affiliated forces, the Peshmerga, considered that the deployment of the Iraqi army in those locations was a violation of the borders of the region."
On October 21, the Kurdistan Workers' Party, which is present in several areas in northern Iraq, announced the complete withdrawal of its forces from the Makhmour camp, which includes displaced Kurds from Turkey, and was subjected several times to strikes by Turkish aircraft targeting members and leaders of the party's militants.
The camp includes more than 12 thousand people, and is located in the center of Makhmour district, located between Nineveh and Erbil governorates, the capital of the Kurdistan region. It is geographically about 105 kilometers from the city of Mosul, and 70 kilometers from Erbil.
