The Ministry of Transport is studying offers from international companies to purchase modern trains and locomotives to sustain and develop the railway sector in the country, in conjunction with the implementation of the Development Road Project, while working to rehabilitate and operate lines in all governorates.
Director of the Ministry’s Media Office, Maitham Al-Safi, said in an interview with Al-Sabah, followed by Al-Iqtisad News, that the Ministry has begun, within its plan to develop the railway sector, the preparation of an integrated plan in conjunction with its steps towards initiating the implementation of the Development Road Project, indicating that the plan includes several axes, including Purchasing modern trains and locomotives from international companies specialized in this field, rehabilitating all damaged and abandoned passenger trains, especially Chinese ones, in addition to locomotives designated for transporting petroleum derivatives, coordinating with international companies to supply them with spare parts, as well as maintaining and rehabilitating all railway lines, and removing all He pointed out that the Ministry has received offers to purchase modern trains and locomotives from international companies specialized in this sector, and the offers are currently under study by a specialized committee in the Ministry and the General Railway Company.
Al-Safi added that the Ministry is working to rehabilitate and operate all the railway network lines in the governorates, including the Baghdad, Diyala, Kirkuk, Sulaymaniyah and Erbil lines, in addition to the Badra and Jassan lines and the provinces of Wasit, Babylon, Holy Karbala and Najaf Al-Ashraf, noting at the same time that the completion rates of the related railway lines have been exceeded.
