The Minister of Environment, Engineer Nizar Amidi, stressed the importance of supporting the government effort by enhancing collective and cooperative work with state institutions, ministries, and civil society organizations, in order to preserve the marshlands from a human and cultural standpoint, and to preserve environmental diversity in the marsh areas.
This came during his participation in a ministerial meeting of the National Committee for Managing the Marshlands as a World Heritage Property, and the Response Follow-up Committee of the World Heritage, in the presence of the deputy governors in Maysan and Muthanna, the advisor to the Parliamentary Agriculture and Water Committee, and a number of general directors in the relevant ministries and specialists.
The Minister of Environment indicated the Ministry's commitment to strive and coordinate with the concerned and relevant ministries, in order to achieve Iraq's obligations within international agreements, especially after the inclusion of the marshes as a world heritage property, and based on the guidelines and implementation principles of international agreements.
The Minister of Environment stated the continued effort to provide adequate legal protection for the majority of natural components and reduce illegal hunting of birds and fish and overgrazing, pointing to the continuation of joint cooperation with the relevant ministries, with a commitment to submit annual national reports, discuss the rights of national and international marshes, and contribute with all stakeholders.
The representative of the UNESCO World Heritage Center also thanked the efforts made by the Minister of Water Resources and those working in this field for their support and organization, stressing the importance of this mission for the sustainability of life for future generations.
