Discussions to set a new date for the Kurdistan Parliament elections

The Kurdistan region is awaiting the agreement of its political parties and parties to set a new date for holding the parliamentary elections in its sixth session, at a time when the Independent High Electoral Commission has completed all logistical and technical preparations for it. The leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Wafa Muhammad Karim, told “Al-Sabah” : The President of the region, Nechirvan Barzani, will visit Sulaymaniyah Governorate within a few days in order to discuss with the heads and members of the Kurdish parties from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Change and the Islamic parties that will participate in the elections, indicating that the visit will be in order to set a date for the elections, especially after the Election Commission’s decision to set a date for them. He pointed out that it is within the powers of the President of the Region to determine the date of the elections, but he wants to agree with the other political parties on the date to ensure effective participation by everyone, pointing out that setting the final date for the visit is not yet known. Karim confirmed that during the visit, the date of the elections will be determined with the participation of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, adding that some of the demands of the Democratic Party to participate in the elections have been implemented, including the return of the quota seats. For his part, the leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Ghiyath Sorgi, told Al-Sabah that he does not have information about Nechirvan Barzani’s visit to Sulaymaniyah yet, calling on the president of the region to speed up the date of the elections as soon as possible. He explained full readiness for any date that is set, provided that it is soon, because the current regional government is a caretaker government and lacks a parliament after the Federal Court’s decision to abolish it, and there are no provincial councils, at a time when the region is going through economic, financial, and political crises and strife between its political parties.
