    Economy News - Baghdad
Member of the Parliamentary Agriculture and Water Committee, Thaer Al-Jubouri, revealed today, Saturday, the start of establishing the first water management council in Iraq.
Al-Jubouri said, "Water is still at the top of the priorities of the parliamentary Agriculture and Water Committee, given the challenges that have arisen in recent years with global warming and the decline in water flow rates from rivers shared with neighboring countries at very high rates, turning them into a pressure card to achieve economic benefits for some countries."
He added that "his committee asked Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani in repeated meetings to begin establishing a Supreme Council for Water Management in Iraq, which will be responsible for managing a strategic file with powers," noting that "this establishment has already been officially initiated a few days ago by determining the administrative structure and legal cover, and it will be announced soon."
Al-Jubouri pointed out that "unifying the management of the water file with all its challenges and placing it under the responsibility of a council that includes experts and specialists will ensure objective solutions, give early warning signals, and draw a road map for how to exploit the water in the dams in optimal ways, while presenting suggestions on how to increase water storage and benefit as much as possible from rain and floods."
Iraq has been suffering from a lack of water releases from upstream countries for years, which has been reflected in the decline in the levels of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, at a time when the current government continues to work to resolve the crisis through diplomatic means, in parallel with the launch of a plan to rationalize water use, especially with regard to following the modern opinion method in irrigating agricultural lands.
