    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Iraqi engineers have invented a device capable of converting plastic waste into fuel used in several fields, including electricity.
The Assistant Chief Engineer of the Oil Research and Development Center, Rasul Muwaffaq Khazal, said in a televised report broadcast by the British BBC network, and followed by Baghdad Today, that “the team at the research center was recently able to invent a device to recycle plastic waste that works by compressed thermal decomposition.”
She explained that "every 10,000 kg of plastic waste produces 7,600 litres of oil, 2,224 litres of gas and 176 kg of coal, and can be used to produce 14 megawatts of electrical energy, 6 megawatts used within the same station and 8 megawatts net of energy production."
She noted that "fuel produced from plastic can be used to fuel ovens and other things," stressing that "laboratory experiments have proven the efficiency of fuel produced from plastic waste," noting that "the product is comparable to traditional fuel derived from oil."
The cost of implementing this innovation is about $20 million, and it is expected that the cost of its implementation will be recovered within 3 years, according to the Iraqi Research Center.
The process of extracting fuel from plastic waste will be accompanied by smoke that pollutes the air, but environmental experts have reduced the impact of this pollution compared to traditional fuel, provided that these recycling plants are built far from cities and residential areas.
It is estimated that Iraq produces 40 million tons of solid waste annually, which poses a serious challenge to the environment and public health, including cancer and genetic deformities, in addition to its impact on biodiversity.
