Baghdad Council threatens to confiscate illegal generators

Baghdad Provincial Council threatened to take legal measures, including confiscation and removal of the generator and changing the contractor, against its owners who violate its decision regarding operating prices and hours.
Council member Muthanna Thaer Al-Azzawi told Al-Sabah: The council obtained the Prime Minister’s approval to increase the number of liters to 40 liters per “KV” and reduce the price of kerosene to 250 dinars per liter instead of 400 dinars, noting that the operating prices will be 8,000 dinars for the regular
and 12,000 dinars for the golden according to technical calculations.
He pointed out that the council opened the door for generators that do not have a fuel share by submitting a request from its owner to the administrative unit and raising it to the Oil and Gas Committee in it, which in turn contacts the Oil Derivatives Authority affiliated with the Ministry of Oil to provide it with the share in a period not exceeding 3-4 days, noting that the majority of generator owners refrain from taking this measure so that the local government or the competent authorities do not control them, and impose the price it deems appropriate on the citizen.
Al-Azzawi confirmed that the head of the council and a number of members visited the head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Faeq Zidane, to raise the issue of penalties imposed on violating generator owners, after the judges explained that there is no legal article stipulating their punishment.
He added that the members requested the implementation of local government decisions, while the judges are the ones concerned with adapting a specific penalty according to the law to hold the generator owner accountable as a deterrent to other violators, indicating that the council obtained approval for the warning and then confiscating the generator or removing it as a violation, and replacing the violators with other operators.
Al-Azzawi pointed out that if the generator owner insists on repeating the violation, there are judicial penalties, in addition to removing a number of violating generators during the past period, and the coming months will be the decisive factor in the commitment of generator owners to operating hours and prices.
