    Economy News - Baghdad
Today, Wednesday, Minister of Planning Mohammed Ali Tamim and the United Nations Population Fund signed a memorandum of understanding for joint cooperation.
A statement by the ministry received by "Al-Eqtisad News" stated that "Iraq and the United Nations Population Fund signed today a memorandum of understanding for joint cooperation between the two sides in a number of fields, most notably supporting the conduct of the general population census. The memorandum was signed on the Iraqi side by the Minister of Planning, Mohammed Ali Tamim, while it was signed on the other side by Nestor Amo Hanji, the representative of the United Nations Population Fund in Iraq."
During the signing, the Minister of Planning explained that "this memorandum comes within the framework of enhancing joint cooperation between the two sides in what is related to supporting population issues and the transition towards achieving development goals."
For his part, the UNFPA representative expressed his appreciation to the Iraqi government for the high trust and funding, and for strengthening the partnership with the Fund on the occasion of signing the memorandum of understanding, indicating that "the UNFPA will provide all types of technical and technological support for the process of conducting the 2024 population census, and work to mobilize resources from donors and existing international bodies to make the process of conducting the general population and housing census in Iraq 2024 a success."
For his part, the head of the General Authority for Statistics and Geographic Information Systems, Diaa Awad Kazim, said after signing the memorandum of understanding: “The memorandum came in implementation of the decision of the Council of Ministers, which directed the renewal of the contract with the United Nations Population Fund, for the memorandum of understanding that was signed in 2020, to support the general population and housing census.”
He stressed "the importance of renewing the memorandum of understanding is to support and advocate for the census process, as this organization is concerned with supporting population censuses in the world," noting that "this time the census will be electronic, and there is a need for support and assistance from international organizations in order to achieve international recognition and acceptance of the results of this census."
The head of the Statistics Authority expressed his "aspiration to increase support and cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund, as the memorandum includes work mechanisms and the exchange of expertise and knowledge, due to the advanced expertise provided by the Fund in the field of census."
