The crisis between a large number of Iraqi writers and the union's administration continues to escalate and boil over in the second ten days of July, the month of major changes in Iraqi life, which this year coincides with the anniversary of the revolution of Imam Hussein, who revolted against injustice and corruption during the reign of the Umayyad Caliph Yazid bin Muawiyah.
The front of protesting writers raises a number of issues that observers see as extremely dangerous for their lives, the life of the country, and its cultural health, in their opinion. Poet Hamid Qasim, who was a member of the Central Council of the Union of Writers more than ten years ago, stresses the expiration of the term of the current leadership according to Law No. 70 of 1980, and thus the illegitimacy of the current union administration and its violation of its law, and that a preparatory steering committee should be formed for the elections of writers as soon as possible. This came in some of his posts on his Facebook page. Another issue that has been raised by the cultural public opinion is the large number of “individuals” who are granted membership for electoral purposes without adhering to the professional and artistic standards that qualify them to enter the literary creativity community, which forced one of the members of the membership acceptance committee, Dr. Hussein Al-Qassed, to announce his withdrawal from the aforementioned committee due to the large number of interventions that were practiced regarding the acceptance of individuals who are not qualified for membership.
In another context, the reactions to the statement of the Secretary-General of the Writers Union, Omar Al-Saray, who tried to escape forward and create a crisis that would occupy public opinion, regarding the poet Abdul Razzaq Abdul Wahid, which was raised by a question from the presenter of a program on Channel 4 about him, are becoming more fierce. Al-Saray stated that Abdul Wahid is an "ordinary" poet and a "profit-making poet." The participants were divided between supporters and opponents, until the debate extended to the point where some of those objecting to the union's performance criticized Al-Saray for describing Abdul Wahid as a profit-making poet, while he was surrounded by a number of poets and critics who had always lived on Saddam Hussein's gifts in exchange for their poems and writings in his praise, which could be described as profiteers, as the short story writer Hussein Rashid pointed out in a post of his.
However, other writers saw in this issue a fabricated uproar that sought to drag the public into a marginal issue to distract attention from the objections to Al-Saray's performance and to cover up fundamental questions and structural objections in the union's approach and the violations and adherence to laws dating back to the era of Saddam Hussein and the failure of the administration to change them, which, according to writers familiar with its law, is working on borrowed time.
Returning to the reactions of the Writers' Union's administration, its Secretary-General published a post confirming that he would stop responding to objections to his management of the union. It stated: "I promise you, and I promise my loved ones who started a campaign that they are trying to make grow, that I will never respond to them." The Secretary-General's response described the objections as aggressive and directed at his administration, and a quick response came from one of the opponents who described the language of the response as feigned arrogance, stressing that the Saray's response was trying to make him appear as a wise man afflicted by his ignorant people!!
Whatever happens, it will still be too early to reveal which of the two teams will win this raging movement in these July days between objections whose owners claim their legitimacy and legality and others who label them as personal attacks of no consequence and turn a deaf ear to them.
For his part, the poet Hamid Qasim returned to publish exciting information about the union's financial revenues, which he described as mysterious secrets. He stated:
The union owns a number of properties in Najaf al-Ashraf - several houses and buildings in the most important commercial area in Najaf, and you know what Najaf is - which became the exclusive property of the union after the dissolution of similar associations and organizations according to Law 70 of 1980, in addition to five dunams in the city of al-Shaab rented to car repair shops. After the transfer of the General Security Directorate from the White Palace to the municipalities, the union was given ownership of two buildings on al-Nidhal Street, which include a number of shops and apartments, in addition to a residential house, all of which are rented. Yarmouk University in Diyala Governorate was licensed in the name of the union, so that the university was paying the union an amount of 400 million dinars, and when the university reduced the amount to 180 million last year, the union refused and filed a complaint with the judiciary. By the way, there is a 50% discount for five students who are sons of union members, meaning 20 million are paid by the union over four academic years, and 380 million remain unknown. Add to this the contract that the union signed a few sessions ago with the club’s contractor without specifying a time period for the contract, which is still in effect and generates Hundreds of millions on the union..
All of this is not disclosed in the financial report (extraordinarily secret) whose details are known only to very few, even members of the Central Council. Also, add the rented shops in front of the union: laboratories, pharmacies, supermarkets, etc., and I will not talk about the annual subscription and renewal fees..!
On the other hand, the poet Dr. Naseer Ghadir said: I distanced myself from getting involved in all the controversies related to the Writers Union because I am not a member of it, and since this publication is concerned with public money, I find it my right as a citizen to support it and support the demand for transparent and public disclosure of this money, and to investigate its fate if it turns out that there was tampering with it.
