Representative of the Coordination Framework, Ali Al-Bandawi, confirmed today, Saturday (November 9, 2024), that Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential elections will not affect the path of withdrawing foreign forces from Iraq.
Al-Bandawi explained that “Trump’s return to the White House will not affect the negotiations to withdraw American forces from Iraq, as these dialogues have reached advanced stages, and there is an initial agreement to withdraw part of the forces in the middle of next year.”
He added, "These military and security dialogues and agreements are not affected by the change of US presidents, as there are specialized institutions that have the authority to negotiate this file, and Iraq is continuing to end this presence in the next stage."
Meeting soon
Yesterday, Friday (November 8, 2024), witnessed the first phone call between Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and US President-elect Donald Trump after the latter won the US presidential elections.
During the call, Trump expressed his desire to meet Al-Sudani “very soon,” according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s media office.
Over the past few days, the victory of Republican candidate Trump in the US presidency has raised questions about the fate of the agreement concluded with Iraq regarding the withdrawal of international coalition forces at the end of next year.
Replacing understandings with “force”
Back in the first term of the controversial president, Trump opposed the withdrawal from Iraq, in order to “watch neighboring Iran.”
Trump said at the time that “Iraqi leaders are not asking for the withdrawal of American forces in private talks,” noting that “the United States has established one of the largest embassies in the world, and has spent billions of dollars on it, and Iraq must pay all those costs.”
After long negotiations that lasted for more than two years, the Iraqi government announced last September that it had reached a plan for the withdrawal of coalition forces by the end of 2025, as Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani confirmed that “American forces have become a factor of attraction for instability, as they are repeatedly targeted and usually respond with attacks without coordination with the Iraqi government.”
On this basis, questions come to mind: “Will Trump undermine diplomatic efforts at the political and military levels regarding the issue of withdrawing foreign forces from Iraq, and then replace understandings with force?”
