    Baghdad Today - Erbil
Economic expert Othman Karim revealed, today, Saturday (July 20, 2024), the reasons for the increase in import rates in the region despite the increasing rates of the economic crisis.
Karim said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "There is an economic crisis in the region that the cities of Kurdistan have experienced throughout the past years, but import rates are still high, as there are border crossings with Iran and Turkey."
He added, "The region is considered the only outlet with Europe, through the entry of goods through the Ibrahim Al-Khalil crossing, and it also has multiple outlets with Iran, and thus the goods enter from the region to the other governorates, and it is not necessary that all the goods are for the region."
He pointed out that "the other reason is that most of the imports are consumer goods that the citizen needs, and not luxury goods, and therefore the citizen is forced to buy despite the crisis, due to his urgent need."
The stagnation of markets in the provinces of the Kurdistan Region continues despite the regular disbursement of salaries of employees in the region during the past months. An economic specialist previously reviewed, in an interview with "Baghdad Today", 3 reasons for this.
Economic expert Farman Hussein said, "The market recession continues in the region's markets for a number of reasons, the most important of which is the continued fear of employees over the instability of salaries."
He added, "The other reason is that most employees are still in debt as a result of loans they took from banks or their relatives, due to the previous financial crisis resulting from the delay in paying salaries."
He explained that "the third reason was the lack of strong tourist arrivals to the cities of the Kurdistan Region, due to the final exams for school and university students, and therefore the markets are still stagnant."
