    The head of the National Wisdom Movement, Ammar al-Hakim, called on the representatives, today, Saturday, August 10, 2024, to further explain, clarify, scrutinize and review the legal articles related to amending the Personal Status Law, while indicating that it is necessary for the law to be appropriate for women’s rights.

    On the occasion of the Islamic Day for Combating Violence against Women, Al-Hakim said, “There is no doubt that the noble lady Zainab bint Ali bin Abi Talib (peace be upon them) and the women and girls who were with her represented the other and perhaps the most important scene in leading the Husseini march towards reform. This is the reason for our constant defense of women, their rights and their status, and the necessity of respecting them, preserving their status, protecting their symbolism and fulfilling their rights, because we call on all women to be like Lady Zainab bint Ali, the heroine of Karbala and the pioneer of the march of the free captives.”



    He added that exposing women to intellectual slippages that target their dignity and distort their human nature, which God Almighty has distinguished them from men, is in itself another form of violence against women. Violence includes all tools of coercion and exposure to women’s dignity, chastity and freedom, which are guaranteed by Sharia and law. He pointed out that women’s freedom does not mean abandoning commitment to Sharia, law and authentic societal customs.

    He continued, regarding the amendment of the Personal Status Law, which has received public attention and has been the subject of much controversy these days, we would like to point out that our new Iraq, our permanent constitution and our democratic system have pledged freedom, respect and understanding of the specificity of Iraqi society with its religions, sects, orientations and nationalities, and it is time to fulfil these rights that do not conflict with the civil nature of the state, the freedom of individuals and the right to express and express opinions with complete independence and respect, calling on the representatives to further explain, clarify, scrutinise and review the provisions of the law to ensure its conformity with the provisions of Islamic jurisprudence and its suitability for the circumstances of the era, and its full protection of women’s rights.

    He pointed out that it is unfortunate that the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives is still vacant and appeals are ongoing to our brothers in the honorable component regarding the necessity of deciding on the candidate without entering into an atmosphere of disagreement and internal conflict, indicating that delaying the decision increases the complexity of the problem and exposes political stability to new risks that we can do without.
