Shocking rise in divorce rates in Iraq: a crisis that troubles society

The divorce rate in Iraq has recently increased significantly, reflecting the worsening social and economic problems affecting family life.
Statistics have indicated a significant increase in divorce cases in recent years, raising concerns about the impact of this phenomenon on social stability and family cohesion in the country.
This increase is due to multiple factors, including economic pressures, social changes, and changing cultural values, which necessitates the need for integrated efforts to deal with this crisis effectively.
“The high divorce rate in Iraq can be a complex issue,” said social researcher Mohammed Khaled, noting that “possible causes may include social and economic changes, such as unemployment and poverty, in addition to cultural and value changes in society.”
He added: “Psychological pressures and unstable relationships may also contribute to the increase in divorce cases.”
The social researcher called for “conducting social research that explores the impact of these factors on individuals and families, and how these issues can be addressed through social policies and programmes.”
The Supreme Judicial Council publishes divorce figures monthly, but those statistics do not include divorces registered in the courts of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, meaning the number is much higher when counting all cases in Iraq as a whole.
Data from Iraqi courts showed “1,782 divorces were registered in June alone.”
According to experts, one of the most prominent factors in this increase in divorce cases in Iraq is unbridled domestic violence. Therefore, what is required is the abolition of Article 41 of the Iraqi Penal Code, which allows what it calls disciplining the wife, and the enactment of laws to protect women and combat domestic violence, which will ultimately ensure a reduction in the increase in the phenomena of violence and divorce.
For several years, specialists have diagnosed the increasing rates of divorce in Iraq year after year, and they sounded the alarm bell, but no treatments were taken for this phenomenon. They identified several reasons for the growth of the divorce phenomenon, most notably early marriage, the economic situation, social media, and interference by the husband’s or wife’s family or friends in their private lives.
