    Paul Maurice deal in question

There has been so much talk about the coaching possibilities are around the NHL due to the availability of Claude Julien, Ken Hitchcock and Gerald Gallant that it seems inevitable that Winnipeg fans would want a piece of the excitement.

Current head coach Paul Maurice is far from a fan favourite for all and in some cases he and his cohorts behind the bench are part of the problem with the on-ie product.

Yesterday in what appeared to be a testy exchange with media until the video was available showing otherwise, Maurice talked about his handling of the youth on the team. He made a rather amusing apology to the citizens of Manitoba for cutting a bit of Laine's ice time.

This is where the focus is on the team and even more so because fans and media have been fed a steady diet of 'draft and develop' and 'the process'. This is what's left to discuss when things are bad and the team is not winning.

To his credit Maurice handled this questioning and topic with grace, humour and a level of candid sarcasm that played down any real issue brewing. He sounded confident and within his rights as the head coach to manage the players in this draft and develop process as he has agreed to.

In essence he sounded like a coach having no fear of losing his job. Should it be otherwise?

This team is a few role players and a goalie away from being a playoff calibre team. If the GM can see those same holes/problems is this not something that is fixable in the offseason? It should be and there would be no reason not to give Maurice an extension before the last year of his deal kicks in.

But the thought of Claude Julien, a coach who has managed to get an arguably an inferior roster playing well enough to be in the playoff hunt is fired due to the same reasons plaguing Maurice, might be too tempting. It should be but at what cost?

It's believed Maurice is earning around 1 million plus per year as coach and Julien would likely be double that maybe more to come to Winnipeg. Gallant might not be a bad second choice and would likely be cheaper but Julien would remain the top choice.

So ask this, if you believe the the Jets are a few role players(bottom pairing defence) and a goalie away from playoff eligible is that the fix you make first or the coach?

If Maurice is going to be extended and as some in the media have said there is a contract waiting to be signed why not get it over with? Why not signal to the players that he's here, he's the guy who's steering this ship so get on board and get moving?

Remember this is not a team that is known for discipline and adherence to the systems, flawed ones or not. Knowing that it's not changing nor is the architect might help push the team to cohesiveness within those systems.

What if this is not the problem the GM sees? What if he sees that the coach is perhaps a bigger problem and that personnel is too? That's a trickier solution because do you extend the coach if you might have to change personnel and the kind of team you are building?

After speaking to one source a small nugget of information emerged, 'management plan to get rid of what they find to be a the problem soon'.

This would suggest they are reviewing the team in certain ways and looking to eliminate the identified problems. This is not uncommon with any organization, it's just that with smaller ones of high profile people there's more scrutiny from beyond.

While the idea of extending Paul Maurice by giving him another deal may be in question, it's likely not the only thing question. That's because if the organizations finds problems they will have more than a few questions and possible solutions.

Ask this though, if Chevy is going to address the depth on defence and goaltending this offseason are you comfortable with Maurice continuing on? I would suggest if that is your belief then you accept that he has not always been dealt a decent roster in Winnipeg and deserves the chance to coach one.

That means one thing, can Chevy see where the problems are and is he able to fix them?
