Baghdad Provincial Council, in coordination with relevant authorities, is working to establish a specialized center to monitor the environmental situation in the capital, as part of a comprehensive plan in this field.
Council member Mohammed Amin told Al-Sabah that his council has prepared a plan in coordination with the Baghdad Municipalities Directorate and relevant authorities to diagnose the environmental problems facing the capital, and to develop appropriate solutions for them, noting that the plan includes establishing a specialized, integrated center as a special operations room to monitor the environmental situation in the capital, by receiving data from administrative units and district governors regarding any environmental violation in the regions. He pointed out that the aforementioned center will include placing special sensors in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment in all districts and sub-districts to identify the types of pollution, determine its sources and how to eliminate it, in addition to establishing regular sanitary landfill sites on both sides of Karkh and Rusafa. Amin continued that the above prompted the governorate to issue a decision to close all unlicensed sanitary landfill sites and hold accountable and fine any individual, institution or entity that burns waste instead of following proper and proper methods of disposing of it, in addition to monitoring pollution in the Tigris River as a result of throwing tons of waste into it daily by hospitals, civil and governmental institutions, and recreational facilities and facilities.
He pointed out that all members of the Council are working to form committees to follow up on the mechanisms for implementing the plan, each within his region, because the success of the plan depends largely on field and integrated work between all relevant parties.
