Tyson Barrie was aboard the team charter Friday when the Avalanche left for their five-game road trip that starts Saturday in New York against the Rangers.

They'll also play the New York Islanders, New Jersey, Buffalo and Carolina. The next home game is Feb. 19 against Tampa Bay.

Barrie has missed three games in a row and seven of the past nine with a lower-body injury. He practiced Wednesday while wearing a non-contact jersey and skated Thursday, but the Avalanche didn't have a morning skate and didn't practice Friday.

Whether he plays against the Rangers won't be determined until Saturday. Rene Bourque didn't travel, but he could join the team at some point. He's missed three games because of a head injury.

Eric Gelinas, who cleared waivers last week, has been sent to San Antonio. He was a healthy scratch the past two games and has one assist in 27 games.

Matt Nieto, who took a slap shot in the back of his leg from Montreal's Shea Weber on Tuesday, played 17:54 Thursday against Pittsburgh but didn't have a shot on goal. Neither did his center, Matt Duchene. Wonder if all the trade talk is getting to him; his only two goals in the past 15 games came Jan. 17 against Chicago.

"We're going into some tough buildings," coach Jared Bednar said. "I think we have to be focused and continue to approach games the exact same way as we have. We're going to give our guys a little bit of rest on this trip. It's not a whole bunch of travel, but our games are in a different arena every night.

"It'll be challenging. We're going to push here and try and come home and make sure we have a winning record on this thing."

The usual defensive lapses and some bad luck were factors Thursday in the Avalanche's 4-1 loss to Pittsburgh in a game that was actually pretty competitive.

Turnovers by Patrick Wiercioch and Francois Beauchemin led to the Penguins' first and third goals. Patric Hornqvist scored the first of his two goals on a power play for a 2-0 lead shortly after Nikita Zadorov was penalized for holding against Sidney Crosby on a borderline call at best.

Chris Kunitz scored into an empty net with 36.5 seconds to play.

Nathan MacKinnon was flying all night while playing against Crosby, his Nova Scotia pal. He had four shots on goal and hit a post three times. Mikko Rantanen also clanged a shot off a post and John Mitchell missed a wide-open net from close range.

Crosby was kept off the scoresheet and needs two points for 1,000 in his career. He was dangerous with two shots and several passes that could have led to goals.

"It's a game of millimeters," MacKinnon said -- might be my favorite quote of the season. "They're a really good team, they're fast and they won the Cup last year for a reason.

"I think Sid could have had three or four points. Sid made some great passes and eventually you say, 'Wow, how does he do that?' That's why he's been the best for 12 years."

The two faced off a number of times, but neither had a great day on draws. MacKinnon lost 12 of 23 and Crosby lost 14 of 26.

"We didn't talk (during the game)," MacKinnon said. "I would be the one to talk, but he's pretty serious. I guess that's what makes him so good. He's always serious. But it's fun playing against him. We don't get to see them very often and he was hurt back in October when we played them."

After combining for nine goals in wins against Winnipeg and Montreal, the Avalanche couldn't solve Penguins goalie Matt Murray until Gabriel Landeskog scored on a power play with 3:16 remaining.

"I thought we did a lot of good things," Bednar said. "Just maybe the mentality a little bit and maybe the confidence we got from the last couple games. It was a pretty good homestand. You don't want to trade chances with a team like that, but the thing is they're a fast team, they put five guys in the rush, their 'D' are involved and they're going to create some chances.

"They gave us some trouble on their forecheck and we had a couple unforced turnovers and a couple plays in coverage we shouldn't be making. The mistakes that we made cost us, but we did have some jump.

"We made some mistakes and did some things in the second period that I really didn't like, but I like that we stuck with it in the third. Some of those games early in the year, 3-0 turned into 6-0. But we continued to push."
