Rapid Reactions: Bolts Come Out Flat Against Bruins

The Tampa Bay Lightning dropped the most important game of their season, losing to the Bruins 4-0 in Boston. The Bolts completed their five-game regular season series against the Bruins going 1-3-1.

Last night's loss put an end to a six-game point streak for the Lightning, as well as a five-game road win streak. In addition, Tampa was shut out for the sixth time this season.

    Just Didn't Have It

Last night's battle between Atlantic Division rivals was huge for both parties involved. Unfortunately, the Bruins were the only team that came out hungry which led to the Lightning being dominated in all aspects of the game.

Simply put, the Bolts could not get anything going. Boston even had the upper hand on Tampa Bay's five-minute power play opportunity. With the Bruins losing Brad Marchand for the game after his spear to Jake Dotchin's "midsection", the Lightning had a golden opportunity to do some damage. Unfortunately, they could not take advantage.

What we saw last night was a beaten up Tampa team that has lost its gas after battling to stay in the playoff race for so long.

    Inexcusable

I could not write this without some mention of Marchand's incredibly dirty play in the first period of last night's game. What he did does not belong in professional sports and I hope he suffers some serious consequences for it. There are enough unintentional dangers out there on the ice that a player should not feel like they have to be on the lookout for that kind of play. I don't expect the repercussions for Marchand's actions to be that punishing but I sure as heck think they should be.

    All But Over

The Lightning really needed a win last night. Now they are five points behind Toronto for the final wild-card spot with only three games remaining. Yes, there is still a mathematical chance this team can still make the postseason but it is pretty darn unlikely.

Tampa Bay can no longer catch the Bruins so they will have to rely on the Maple Leafs or Senators to fall while they win their final three games.

    On Tap

The Lightning head to Toronto to take on the Maple Leafs on Thursday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
