For weeks it has been rumored Ilya Kovalchuk would like to return to the NHL.

Some questioned whether this was just a ploy from Kovalchuk's camp to try and get more money on a new deal in Russia but it turns out Kovalchuk is serious about returning to North America.

Since rumors of a Kovalchuk return surfaced, the likes of Elliotte Friedman and Pierre LeBrun have hinted it's unlikely he ends up back with the Devils.

That also appears to be true as Devils GM Ray Shero has given Kovalchuk's camp permission to gauge interest league-wide and seek out a sign-and-trade.

There will no doubt be a lot of suitors for Kovalchuk -- he put up 78 points in 60 KHL games this past season and is still a dynamic player -- but ultimately it's Kovalchuk who will determine the kind of return New Jersey can fetch for him.

If Kovalchuk is willing to go to a handful of teams, Shero can turn them against each other and start a bidding war of sorts to maximize the return.

If Kovalchuk has his eyes set on, say, two teams, it could be difficult for Shero to pry quality assets in a sign-and-trade unless he puts on a hell of a poker face and convinces interested parties he has more options than they think.

One interesting wrinkle is 2017 draft picks can not be involved in any potential trade.

I doubt Shero wants to move a player of Kovalchuk's caliber for 2018 draft picks (unless he's getting really good ones) so it's likely bodies will be coming back in any trade, be it prospects or players already in the NHL.

Just how good those prospects/players are remains to be seen but the Devils will be getting something for a guy who was completely out of the picture but a few weeks ago. That's good news for a team that hasn't had much of it over the last few years.
