Seven prisoners have been killed by rioters following a rebellion in a prison for minors in the city of Lago Sika in Paraiba state, northeast of Brazil, Brazilian television reported.
The Reuters news agency quoted Brazilian Globo television as saying that young men were killed after prison guards began trying to prevent rebel prisoners from escaping.
Rebels burned furniture and mattresses, and clashes broke out among the prisoners during the rioting, some of whom were burned and others stabbed.
The agency stressed that more than 20 detainees managed to escape from prison during the fire, which broke out as a result of riots, adding that police are currently searching for them.
It should be noted that prisons in Brazil often witness rebellions and riots due to overcrowding and lack of necessary supplies.
