Qatari funds in Iraq, where to?

Baghdad/ Iraq TradeLink: Iraq acknowledged that it has hundreds of millions of dollars sent by Qatar

to release its hostages in Iraq since April, 2015.

Some media reports said that these funds reached to Iran, which angered Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries that contributed in severing relations.

But, Iraqi Premier Ibadi confirmed that the funds are under the custody of the Central Bank of Iraq, waiting a governmental decision.

Without any details, Ibadi did not elaborate how the Iraqi government will deal with these funds, because they have political and legal aspects according to the Iraqi law.

Premier Ibadi, earlier, stated that these funds were sent to Iraq without the approval of Baghdad.

Other reports said that Iraq is conducting talks with the Qatari side, irrespective of the current Gulf crisis, while others disclosed that the Iraqi finance ministry confiscated the funds as "money laundering".

The reports added that the Qatari embassy in Baghdad protested this procedure because the funds belong to the Qatari government and was transported in Qatari plane.

Despite these contradictory reports, the money laundering could be cancelled and the funds could be registered as "direct financial support to Iraqi charity organization that will rehabilitate the areas liberated from Da'ish (ISIS) control, which could be a compromise solution that Qatar may accept and relieves the Iraqi side of any future embarrassment.

No party announced its responsibility for the kidnapping that took place near the Saudi Arabia where pro-Iran armed groups were stationed.
