Hurricane María struck Puerto Rico as the strongest storm to hit US territory in nearly 90 years, turning the streets into rivers full of debris, destroying buildings and cutting electricity after at least nine people were killed in the Caribbean.

Maria, the second major hurricane to pass through the Caribbean this month, was carrying winds of up to 250 km / h and accompanied by torrential rains when he reached land near Yabucoa in the southeast of the island of 3.4 million people.

"The rivers flooded the banks and the wind blew down trees and destroyed houses and buildings, including several hospitals," media said, and a picture of news channels showed entire buildings flooded in the Sato Ri district of San Juan.

El Nuevo Dia said electricity had been cut off across the island. Thousands of people are looking for safety in shelters.

The US National Hurricane Center said that Maria lost some of his strength as he traveled on land, but the maximum wind speed associated with him is still 220 kilometers away from the island.

The hurricane was located about 40 kilometers west of San Juan shortly before 11 am EDT (1500 GMT), the center said.

Government officials said María killed at least seven people on the island of Dominica and two in Guadeloupe, a French territory, while crossing the Caribbean. It also caused extensive damage to St. Croix, one of the British Virgin Islands.

Hurricane Erma, which has been classified as one of the strongest hurricanes in recorded Atlantic storms, has devastated many Caribbean islands and Florida this month and killed at least 84 people in the Caribbean and the United States.
