The inhabitants of the marshes cut through the Chabaish road to protest the traffic accidents
Dhi Qar / Hussein Al-Amel
Hundreds of residents of the areas of the marshes of the province of Dhi Qar, on Monday, in protest against the rise of victims of the road of death link between the areas of the Chabaish and the city of Nasiriyah, and as they cut off the road, they called for the resumption of work on the second corridor, which stopped work a few years ago.
Ali al-Brahimi, one of the participants in the demonstration for the "range", said that "hundreds of areas of the marshes demonstrated today to demand the resumption of work and completion of the second corridor of the road of death (Nasiriyah-Chabaish), which is witnessing traffic accidents horrific daily," noting that "traffic accidents cause Killing and injuring more than 10 people in one week. "
"The Nasiriyah-Jabayish road is crowded and tight and does not match the traffic flow of five administrative units: Sayid Dakhil, Al-Islah, Al-Fahud, Al-Manar and Jibayish districts (90 km east of Nasiriyah)," he said. Is the only way for about 300 trucks to transport the blocks of factories deployed in the area of reform.
For his part, Hassan al-Salhi called on the local government to "expedite the paving of the second corridor of the Nasiriyah-Jabayish road".
Salhi said in a statement to the "range", that "the work project paving the road stopped due to financial differences between the local government and the executing company."
Al-Salhi confirmed the monitoring of "more than 19 billion dinars for the implementation of the project within the project plan for the province for 2014, but the project has not been completed so far."
"The project has been suspended since 2015 so far, causing many of the horrific traffic accidents that have claimed the lives of hundreds of marsh dwellers," he said.
The demonstrators gathered on the road to Nasiriyah and set up a marquee to cut the road, which called for the intervention of security forces to open the way to traffic of vehicles.
In turn, the first deputy governor of Dhi Qar Adel al-Dakhili told "Al-Mada" that "the demonstration of the Marshlands population included demands to resume work on the second corridor project, which is suspended due to the current financial crisis experienced by the country."
Stressing that "the suspension of the project and other service projects confused the work of the province and led to the aggravation of the suffering of citizens, including residents of the marshes."
He pointed out that the administration of the province was counting on the visit of the Prime Minister Haider Abadi to the province in the launch of financial allocations for road projects, especially those called the names of ways of death.
Al-Dakhili called on "the federal government to expedite the funding of important projects, especially the vital roads projects to avoid further casualties."
On February 11, 2017, the head of the district of Syed Dakhil Haidar Aziz stated that "traffic accidents on the Nasiriyah-Jabbayish road are occurring on a daily basis" and that "the inhabitants of the marshes are losing 21 people every month as a result of traffic accidents."
Pointing out that "the project of the second corridor of the road Nasiriyah - Chabaish, which has been implemented since 2014, the length of 90 km and was divided into three sections, 30 km per section for the purpose of accelerating the implementation, but the work stopped the project as a result of the current financial crisis, Completed 70 percent of the work of the project. "
The governor of Dhi Qar Yahya Mohammed Baqir al-Nasseri, in September 2014 laid the foundation stone for the first phase of the project of the second corridor of the road Nasiriyah - Chabaish, which is being implemented at the expense of the plan to revive the Marshlands for 2013 at a cost of 19 billion dinars.
The administrative units affiliated to the province of Dhi Qar are connected to an old and narrow road system with a single passageway that does not absorb the traffic momentum and the large number of vehicles that entered the governorate after 2003. This causes unfortunate traffic accidents, especially between the center of Nasiriyah and the districts of Chabaish, Suq al-Shuyukh and al-Batha district. Parents have called many of these methods called "ways of death" because of the terrible incidents.
