South Korean President Moon Jie said Wednesday after the first official inter-Korean talks in more than two years that the goal of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula can not be abandoned.

"The denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, which the two Koreas have agreed to together (in the past), remains the fundamental principle that can not be abandoned," Moon said in a speech at a news conference.

During their first official talks in more than two years on Tuesday, the two Koreas agreed to resolve all issues related to the two countries through dialogue and resume military talks to avoid any potential conflict.

He stressed that the denuclearization of the North is "the road to peace, our goal," adding, "We must peacefully resolve the North Korean nuclear issue."

"I leave the door open for any kind of meeting, including the summit, if the inter-Korean relations require it," the South Korean president said of his willingness to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

"Dialogue can not be the only solution," he said. "The international community can impose tough sanctions and pressure on North Korea if North Korea does not show its serious stance or dare to provoke military action again."

The tension escalated with the arrival of US President Donald Trump to the presidency, a series of threats against North Korea, and his forces conducted a series of military exercises with Japan and South Korea, which responded to North Korea to develop its missile and nuclear arsenal.
