In a unique precedent in the history of Iraq, the alliance of the leader of the Sadrist movement, Moqtada al-Sadr, with a Communist Party to contest the Iraqi legislative elections in May.

"This alliance is the first in Iraq, it is the revolution of the Iraqis for reforms with civilians or a moderate Islamic trend," said Ibrahim al-Jabri, a leader of the Sadr movement who oversees the organization of the demonstrations.

"We are not surprised by this alliance because we have been fighting together for more than two years against sectarianism in all provinces."

Newspaper: Sadr is running for elections with parties working for the "secular state"

The newspaper Asharq al-Awsat reported on Monday that it was the first time in the history of Iraq,
"the alliance of cleric Moqtada al-Sadr with a communist party to contest the legislative elections scheduled for next May in the country.
"Unlike all the clergy, Muqtada al-Sadr chose to run his campaign alongside parties he considered until recently to be far from religion and working for a secular state," the paper said.
The newspaper quoted the leader of the Sadrist movement Ibrahim Jabri that "this alliance is the first in Iraq. It is the Iraqis' revolution for reforms with civilians or a moderate Islamist trend. "
"We are not impressed by this alliance because we have been fighting together for more than two years against sectarianism in all provinces," Jabri said.
Raed Fahmi, secretary of the Communist Party of Iraq, told AFP that "these demands do not wear a sectarian character and for a national civil project aimed at achieving social justice."
"The important thing is that people from an Islamic and secular movement are allowed to work together," he said.
"Cooperation was born among people who initially did not have any common ideology and then developed into a political alliance," Fahmi said.
The alliance, known as "Asroun al-Islah", is divided into six blocs, including the Iraqi Communist Party and the Al-Istiqama Party, which includes technocrats backed by Moqtada al-Sadr.
