The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), the Japanese government is contributing an additional 10 million US dollars, to support the recovery and reconstruction efforts in Iraq. Part of this contribution will also be used to support Syrian refugees living in Iraq.

UNAMI said in a press release that the Japanese contribution would help "expand livelihood and income-generating activities to 9,000 vulnerable Iraqis. These activities aim to revitalize the agriculture sector by rehabilitating the irrigation channels and irrigation systems damaged by the fighting. "

"For four years, Japan has been providing assistance to the vulnerable Iraqis and Syrian refugees in Iraq affected by the attacks of a sympathetic organization through Japan's supplementary budget," said Fumio Iwai, Japan's ambassador to Iraq.

"This $ 10 million contribution to the World Food Program is part of the new humanitarian package and efforts to restore stability to Iraq, which amounts to about $ 100 million. Japan will continue to assist displaced people, returnees, refugees and host communities in Iraq while supporting Iraq's development efforts. "

This contribution will also be used to provide food assistance for seven months to 23,000 Syrian refugees living in the Kurdistan Region through WFP's e-voucher system. Refugee e-vouchers provide US $ 19 per person per month to buy food at their choice from local stores.

"As the situation in Iraq remains fragile, we need to continue to provide assistance to the most needy families while at the same time building the economic independence of the Iraqi people," said Sally Haydock, WFP Representative in Iraq.

"The World Food Program (WFP) has always relied on Japan to support Iraq, and this recent contribution demonstrates Japan's continued commitment to supporting the country to move forward in building its future," she said.
