The US military is blocking the purchase of Chinese Huawei phones. Why?
no longer working in US military bases can buy phones and other devices, manufactured by two companies Huawei and "ZTE" Chinatan, after the US Department of Defense said that it posed a security threat.
The ministry is tough on electronic devices used to spy on the military or track their movement.
"Huawei and ZTE devices may pose an unacceptable threat to the (military) elements, information and missions," Pentagon spokesman Maj. Dave Eastburn said Friday.
He added that based on this information "it is not wise to continue to sell" in the army's army stores in bases around the world.
Eastburn said the decision was made on April 25 to withdraw Huawei devices from sale, as well as ZTE phones and related devices, without specifying a date.
He did not mention the technical aspects related to the threat, but the Wall Street Journal said the Pentagon feared the Chinese government would track down the soldiers using these devices.
Huawei's spokesman said the company's hardware provides the highest standards of security, privacy and software engineering in every country where it is used, including in the United States.
"We remain committed to openness and transparency in everything we do, and we want to be clear that no government has ever asked us to compromise on the security or safety of any of our networks or organs."
The US Department of Defense announced in January that it was reviewing its policy on fitness applications and devices that would allow trainees to follow walking or running after Strava published a map showing the activity of its users.
This was particularly dangerous in Iraq and Syria, where the activities could be traced back to remote areas with military bases, running or walking routes.
In February, director of national intelligence and other intelligence officials, Dan Coates, said Americans should refrain from buying the equipment of the two Chinese companies.
"Cyber espionage and cyber attacks will continue to support China's national security and economic priorities," Coates told the Senate Intelligence Committee.
