(Baghdad: Al-Furat News) Oil Minister Jabbar al-Luaibi revealed close to the ministry's signature on the establishment of a large oil refinery in the province of Basra.
"The next few days will witness the signing of the contract of the FAO refinery with a capacity of 300,000 barrels per day. This is for export. We are seeking to turn Iraq from an importing country into a source of oil derivatives," al-Allaibi said in a press statement.
"In our future plans, we are keen to get the production of oil derivatives to 2 million barrels per day in 2024," he said.
"We are currently working on more than 12 refineries throughout the country, and we in the ministry opened wide doors on investment plans, in order to build refineries up to 1.5 million barrels per day throughout the country and we signed during the past days a contract to build a refinery in Kirkuk with a capacity of 70 thousand barrels Daily".
He pointed out that "the capacity of liquidation in all refineries currently operating 670 thousand barrels per day, and this production is not enough to meet the needs of the country, which amounts to one million and 200 thousand barrels per day, where the shortage of imports, which is a major imbalance, especially as the amounts of import derivatives exceed Since 2003, no new refinery has been built in Iraq.
