The Russian ruble hit its lowest level against the dollar in more than two years on Thursday on fears of further sanctions on Russia and buying foreign currency for the country's reserves.
By 0851 GMT, the ruble was down 1.19 percent against the dollar to 68.84 after hitting 68.96 rubles per dollar, its lowest level since April 2016.
The ruble lost 0.6 percent to trade at 79.61 against the euro, its lowest level since April.
"The sentiment, especially among global investors, remains highly sensitive to the rhetoric of sanctions," analysts at VTB Capital said in a note.
Fears of new sanctions have been fueled by the latest US statements and by US Special Representative Robert Mueller's investigation into the alleged Russian influence on the US election.
The ruble was also affected by foreign currency purchases for state reserves. The Russian central bank bought 20.1 billion rubles ($ 300.1 million) in foreign currency reserves on August 21, compared with 17.5 billion rubles the day before.
