    The leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Massoud Barzani and his party met on Friday with Sadr's leader Moqtada al-Sadr at his residence in Najaf.

    "The meeting dealt with the political process, matters of interest to the country and the need to promote stability," said a brief statement issued by Sadr's information office.

    For his part, Barzani's press office said in a statement that Sadr expressed "his happiness to visit Barzani, describing it as a mission and historical, and that it sent the hearts of all the political parties of Iraq."

    The statement quoted Sadr as saying that Barzani's visit "the beginning of a mission and a new direction and positive for the political process in Iraq and prevent the recurrence of mistakes and the establishment of a new government."

    "During the meeting, the two sides stressed that there is a new opportunity available for the relations between Arbil and Baghdad and the need to work to build confidence and resolve differences and reflect the real partnership."

    "The meeting stressed the continuation of relations and deepen confidence and support of the new Iraqi government."

    Barzani and his high-ranking delegation arrived in the holy city of Najaf Friday for a meeting with Sadr.

     Barzani arrived in Baghdad on Thursday morning and held a series of meetings with political leaders and government officials in Baghdad, a move he said was to "correct the course" between the two sides.

    Barzani made a visit to Baghdad, the first since 2017, and after strained relations between the two sides in an unprecedented manner, following the referendum on independence for the Kurdistan region, which supported 93% of voters for independence from Iraq.
