Iraq signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Iran on Thursday to expand cooperation in the field of energy.
The signing of the memorandum after granting Iraq a period of 90 days, which allows the import of electricity from Tehran, according to a statement issued by the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity.
Earlier on Thursday, Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardkanian arrived in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on an unannounced official visit.
The statement said that "Iraqi Minister Loay Khatib concluded a meeting with the Iranian Ministry of Energy, represented by its Minister, Reza Ardkanyan, to develop and expand the volume of joint cooperation in the field of electric power."
"The memorandum will result in the signing of a memorandum of understanding in the coming period, which will include a series of technical, technical and economic agreements related to the national electricity system and the exchange of experience and consultation in the three sectors of the ministry (production, transport and distribution), as well as importing electricity and gas."
On December 21, the United States granted Iraq a 90-day deadline to allow Iran to import electricity, allowing Baghdad to bypass US sanctions on Tehran in the current period.
The US decision came days before the deadline for Iraq's November 5 deadline of 45 days.
The lack of energy in Iraqi cities ignited a popular crisis followed by widespread protests against the government last summer.
Iraq is seeking to import up to 28 million cubic meters of natural gas from Tehran to its factories, and is directly buying 1,300 megawatts of Iranian electricity to overcome the energy problem.
It needs more than 23,000 megawatts of electricity to meet the needs of people and institutions without interruption.
The population's resentment is high in the summer (peak season), with interruptions in the national grid of electricity rising with temperatures rising to some days at 50 degrees Celsius.

"The victory in the field of providing electricity is a victory for reconstruction and a sign of progress for nations. Iraq must overcome the stumbling block in the field of energy and to become an importing country, but a producer of energy," said Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi.

During his meeting with Iranian Energy Minister Reza Erdkanyan and his accompanying delegation, he stressed the depth and diversity of relations between the two countries and the Iraqi and Iranian peoples. He thanked the Islamic Republic for its efforts to develop the relations between the two countries and its cooperation in meeting Iraq's electricity needs. And to find the necessary solutions and the success of the discussions between officials and experts involved in this file between the two neighboring countries.

The Iranian minister pointed out that his country is ready to provide Iraq with electricity and the establishment of power plants and maintenance and help develop the necessary technology in this area and training Iraqi cadres and work according to a timetable to reduce the great waste and increase Iraq's electricity production, in addition to the direct link, pointing to the preparation of a draft understanding to sign the joint contract.

On the other hand, the President of the Republic Barham Salih said that the countries of the region have a great responsibility to consolidate the foundations of peace and stability through a serious dialogue to enhance confidence and achieve the desire of joint cooperation and serve the peoples of the region.

During his meeting at the Peace Palace in Baghdad on Thursday, Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardkanian stressed the importance of developing relations in all fields, especially in the fields of energy and water, in a way that enhances cooperation between the two friendly countries.

For his part, Minister Erdkanian stressed Iran's keenness to continue cooperation with Iraq in all fields, especially the electricity, energy and water sector and investment in terms of generation and processing, training of specialized cadres and exchange of experiences.
