Minister of Transport Abdullah Luaibi discussed with IRU Secretary General Umberto de Preto Sunday the accession of Iraq to the International Terrestrial Transport System (TIR), stressing that this will contribute effectively to the achievement of many of the strategic goals.
In a statement received by Mawazine News, the Ministry of Transport said that "Luaibi presided over an expanded meeting to discuss Iraq's accession to the Road Transport Agreement (TIR) in the presence of the Secretary-General of the European Union for Road Transport Emberto de Perto and his accompanying delegation and a number of related parties."
"Iraq's accession to the International Terrestrial Transport System (TIR) will contribute to the achievement of many strategic objectives by facilitating trade, attracting investment and improving the efficiency of transport services in Iraq," he said.
He added that "76 countries have joined the agreement, including Turkey, Iran, Jordan and Kuwait, in addition to the three largest countries known trade movement, which recently joined China, India and Pakistan," adding: "In 70 years has not been any violation of this Convention, Iraq comes to complement the efforts of the government to achieve the government program and its interest in trade and transport. "
He stressed the importance of Iraq's accession to the agreement, which will strengthen the elements enjoyed by Iraq with the international community, and the national economy by strengthening the transit movement of goods (transit), and opens new prospects for Iraqi traders to international trade centers such as China, Europe and others.
"We are very satisfied that the development of international transport services and the harmonization of customs procedures with global practices will contribute to the development of regional trade and the sustainability of economic growth," de Brito said.
The TIR facilitates the movement of trade and international transport in the least time and cost-effective manner, improves efficiency by reducing the amount of reports required, streamlining procedures at border crossings, effectively protecting the revenues of each country through which goods pass, The system allows the passage of closed vehicles or containers by customs stamping from the country of origin to the final destination according to easy procedures and without the need for physical inspection through the border crossing points and using a global customs guarantee.
