US President Donald Trump looking for ways to pardon "two or three" of US military personnel convicted of war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"Some of these soldiers are people who fought hard and for a long time, and as you know, we taught them how to become tough fighters, but sometimes when they fought, they were treated unfairly," Trump told reporters.
The US president has yet to announce the names of the convicts to be included in the amnesty, and noted that the court's decision could be awaited before amnesty.
The New York Times reported earlier that Trump had asked the Justice Department to hand over summaries of several war crimes convictions and planned to pardon them on May 27, which marks the anniversary of American deaths in their wars.
The list includes Blackwater's former special agent, Nicholas Slatin, who was convicted by a US court in December of killing 14 civilians in Baghdad in September 2007.
The possible amnesty list includes officer Matthew Golstein, convicted of killing civilians In Afghanistan, and others convicted of representing dead bodies of the Taliban movement
