WASHINGTON (Kurdistan 24) - A senior Pentagon official has warned of "security gaps" on the border line separating Iraqi and Peshmerga forces in disputed areas, noting that ISIS activity is growing in those areas.
ISIS recently carried out several attacks around the disputed areas of Diyala province using guerrilla tactics.
US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Middle East Affairs Michael Mulroy told Kurdistan 24 that ISIS is seeking to re-emerge and that it is "exploiting security gaps" in disputed areas and "along the line between Iraqi and Kurdish forces."
That would require enhanced coordination between those forces, he said.
"The United States strongly supports the recent progress in relations between Baghdad and Erbil ... within the framework of the Iraqi constitution, and the United States also supports the timely resolution of controversial issues, including budget, oil and imports."
Mulroy said that his country "will continue to encourage security coordination between the two sides in order to achieve security and stability in the disputed areas."
On the Syrian issue, the US official pointed out that Moscow views Damascus "as the center of its approach to the greater Middle East."
"Syria offers Russia many opportunities, including ... reestablishing its position as a superpower in the region," he said.
Russia is turning a blind eye to "other US partners in the region, such as Egypt, Israel, the Gulf Cooperation Council and Iraq," Mulroy said.
He said Russia was "thriving in chaos."
However, Mulroy stressed, "Our partners are our most important asset, and we are committed to being a firm partner, taking into account regional security."
