    BAGHDAD -
    The US State Department on Tuesday called on political parties in Iraq to ease tensions.
    "Washington is closely following the situation in Iraq," a US State Department official was quoted as saying.
    "There is no possibility of violence in the demonstrations taking place in Iraq," he said.
    Today's demonstrations in Tahrir Square in central Baghdad saw violence between demonstrators and security forces, killing one demonstrator and wounding 200 others, including 40 members of the security forces.

    The US State Department issued its position on popular demonstrations in Iraq today that resulted in violence and dozens of victims.
    In a statement, the State Department spokeswoman called on "all parties in Iraq to reduce tension."
    "We are watching demonstrations in Iraq and reports of very disturbing casualties."

    [rtl]The US State Department said Tuesday that it was following demonstrations in Iraq.[/rtl]

    [rtl]"We are aware of and following the demonstrations in Iraq," Al Hurra quoted a State Department official as saying.[/rtl]

    [rtl]Thousands of protesters demonstrated in Tahrir Square in central Baghdad, demanding services, improving living conditions, providing jobs for the unemployed, eliminating the widespread unemployment in the society, and the widespread financial and administrative corruption in the state departments and institutions.[/rtl]

    [rtl]Security forces and riot police confronted the demonstrators with hot water hoses, tear gas and live bullets to disperse them in front of Al-Jumhuriya Bridge leading to the fortified Green Zone and the federal government building, injuring dozens of protesters.[/rtl]

    [rtl]The Ministry of Health said in a statement that it recorded one death, while the number of wounded 200 injured, including 40 injured members of the security services, a number of them came out after receiving first aid, as medical staff continue to provide health care for the remaining 50 people.[/rtl]

    BAGHDAD: The US embassy in Baghdad, on Wednesday, regretted the use of violence during protests in Baghdad and a number of provinces.
    A statement by the embassy said it continued to "monitor closely the recent protests. Peaceful demonstrations are a fundamental right in all democracies but there is no room for violence in demonstrations by any of the parties."
    "We deplore the loss of life and offer our condolences to the families of the victims, wishing the speedy recovery of the wounded security forces and protesters. We also call on all parties to renounce violence while restraining." is over
