IRBIL (Kurdistan 24) - Dozens of protesters were killed and hundreds wounded in the latest wave of violence that marred Friday's protests in Baghdad and quickly spread to several southern cities, including Basra.[/ltr]

Medical and security sources for Kurdistan 24 reported that at least 30 protesters were killed and about 2,000 others were injured, some seriously.
Dozens of protesters set fire to party headquarters in at least five southern cities, killing one person, one source said.
He added that a senior leader of the armed group Asaib Ahl al-Haq was killed when protesters stormed the group's headquarters in the southern city of Amara.
It was the latest unrest in the country after nearly 150 people were killed in protests that began this month and lasted nearly a week.
Protesters filled the streets overnight in Baghdad and southern cities, shouting slogans calling for the departure of the ruling political elite and accusing the government of failing to fight rampant corruption since the fall of the former regime in 2003.
Security forces tried to disperse the protesters with tear gas, while there were reports of gunfire from party headquarters guards at the demonstrators.
Security forces have imposed a comprehensive curfew in all southern cities, including Basra, the center of Iraq's oil industry.
Despite attempts by Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi to calm demonstrators through promises of reform and fighting corruption, those efforts appeared to have failed.
The bloody protests represent the most serious challenge facing Abdul-Mahdi since he took office exactly a year ago. There are no signs that the demonstrations have stopped.
Adel Abdul Mahdi, in his last televised speech, said the collapse of the government would push Iraq further into chaos.
The demonstrators believed that security forces would not use violence against them after promises made by the prime minister, but the death toll is a crucial test, especially since the leader of the Sadrist movement Muqtada al-Sadr warned that he would act if there were victims, and ordered his followers to support the demonstrators.
